Rattigan Retains McCartan's Pharmacy HYC Helmsman's Championship

6 finalists competed in a strongly fought battle to crown the 2012 HYC Helmsman Champion which again this year was supported by McCartan's Pharmacy. Simon Rattigan immediately staked his intend to defend the title that he claimed in 2011 by winning the first of 5 races sailed in a brisk 15 - 17 knots.

The event was sailed in the ISA Sailfeet J80's and the blustery conditions meant that the boats were reefed for the first 3 races.

Ronan Cull representing the laser class and Neil Murphy from the Puppeteers relished the conditions and finished 2nd and 3rd in the first race.

The principle race officer; Rupert Jeffares set some great windward/leeward courses with good long beats to test the talents of the finalists.
It was a testament to the finalists that there was a different winner in 4 of the 5 races.

Flor O'Driscoll from the J 24 class won the 2nd race and Diana Kissane from the 420 Class won the 3rd to leave things very tight at the top of the leader board going into race 4 & 5.

to Simon Rattigan

The reefs were shaken out after race 3 and Simon Rattigan claimed his 2nd race victory in race 4 and this was the deciding factor on the day. Consistent results by Ronan Cull and Tara Flood from the Instructors class placed them 2nd and 3rd overall respectively but the day belonged to Simon Rattigan as when discards were applied he reclaimed his title with 6 points from the 5 races - an impressive result indeed.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this annual event such a success - PRO Rupert Jeffares, John Doran, Tom Rickard, Emmet Dalton, Robert Slator and the ribs crews and of course the sponsorship of Brian McCartan of McCartans Pharmacy.
We look forward to 2013.
