The 6th & 7th August sported a fabulous weekend for the Howth 17 Footer One Design class as they took to race in the XRS Howth 17 Footer National Championships 2010.

The racing was amazing, positions were ever changing with no boats winning more than two races. This kept the racing intense and all competitors on their toes with everyone keen to win the XRS Howth 17 Championship Cup.

On coming off the water after the 5th race nobody had any idea as to who was the winner. Many competitors had their own ideas by calculating their perceived race results (workings were completed on scraps of paper!). The intensity of it all subsided when Gaye Bothwell posted the results on the board outside the marina office - this board was swamped with Howth 17 sailors keen to know their overall position.

Congratulations to Roddy Cooper Leila who became the XRS Howth 17 2010 Champion. Roddy Cooper was the most consistent of the day where he took two seconds, a third, a fifth and a discard of a seventh. It is well worth highlighting how close the racing was - that the top seven boats were no more than 6 points apart from the leader.

A further congratulations is offered to Shane O'Doherty and Eoghan Ryan (Pauline) who won the XRS Howth 17 Championship Echo Cup. Pauline had a great championship narrowly missing third position on scratch by one point. Pauline also won the 5th and last race of the championship.

Other boats that won races were Rita (Race1 and 4), Aura (Race 2) and Deilginis (Race 3). The top three Howth 17's of the Championships were: Leila (R Cooper), Rita (M Lynch & J Curley) and Isobel (B & C Turvey).

The Howth 17 Footer class would like to express their thanks to Scorie Walls (PRO) and Harry Gallagher and their team for their sterling performance to provide the class with 5 most comprehensive races. Gaye Bothwell for all the results that were tabulated and posted within minutes (all though for some this felt like hours - awaiting the anticipation of who won!). Rupert Jeffares for driving the Free Enterprise. John Deane for all his help with the entry forms and posting all necessary details on the web. Emmett Dalton for organising the protest committee and finally a big thank you to Pat Kelly from Xpert Revenue Systems for their continuous sponsorship of the Howth 17 Footer Class.

The Howth 17 class celebrated in style with their championship dinner in the restaurant of the Howth Yacht Club. The dinner was attended by Roger Cagney (HYC Vice-Commodore) who thanked XRS for their continued support of the class. Roger also reflected on his own experiences with the Howth 17 Class in his youth. The Howth 17's ended their celebrations with music by their class DJ David O'Shea. Everybody had one fabulous weekend.
