Radio Controlled Model Boat Sailing

Open Winter Series

The International One Metre class is the largest radio controlled yacht class in the world. The last world championship had 81 competitors from 15 countries, including Ireland. The boats are 1m overall length and have three rig sizes for varying wind conditions. Radio controls have two channels, one for sail trim and the other for the rudder.

Howth Yacht Club's Open Winter One Metre series has been running since 1996. On Sunday mornings, tide permitting, six races over windward - leward courses are held. There is an October - December series and a January - March series. Racing starts at 11:00 in the South East corner of the harbour. With the complete course visible and close racing - this is excellent spectator sport.

The Irish Championship is held each March with visiting entrants from the UK and Northern Ireland to race in a one day event with up to 21 races. These are run in sequences of three back-to-back races, with up to twelve starters. The Winner is eligible to represent Ireland at the World Championship. Richard Rowan, boat 85 in the pictures is the current Irish champion.

Hulls are either fibreglass or wooden, with a lead keel bulb and a carbon fibre fin and rudder. Sails have full trim adjustment kicker, outhaul, cunningham, etc. The jib is boom supported and is operated by the same winch as the main sail. The UK has a very active One Metre scene with several specialist suppliers of boats, sails, fittings, etc. Boats are available new as completed boats, kits or designs only for the really keen. Used boats are advertised on various web sites.
