and Commodore Roger Cagney at the 1898 themed BBQ & Prize Giving

Over the last two days the Howth 17 Class battled a closely fought contest to be deemed the Class Champion. The event began on Friday evening at 19:00hrs from the East Pier in Howth and continued into Saturday for a further four more spectacular races in trying conditions for the Race Committee. This two-day event set challenges for Scorie Walls and her team with an abundance of wind shifts, but nothing was too much for their team and all five races were spectacular.

The Championships were raced in true Howth 17 style tight and ultra competitive. The event had its fair share of protests, 720 degrees turns and individual recalls but it appeared that no boat could win more than a race. That was until Sheila helmed by Neil O' Leary broke the mould and won the 4th and 5th race. Races one to three were won by Deilginis (Deilginis Group), Rita (M Lynch / J Curley) and Hera (M & J Duffy).

The boats were helmed and crewed by all different ages but one statistic worth a mention was the average age of one boat (who were the winners of the Howth Trophy (Handicap)) were 72 years (average age) This shows that the Howth 17 Class is for absolutely everybody.

Finally after a tough but excellent day of racing on Saturday the Howth 17 Class and Friends / Guests gathered at the 1898 Themed BBQ & Prize Giving in the HYC Centenary Room. The Howth 17 Class catered for this event by each boat bringing a dish to the table. The "Death by Chocolate" dessert (Rum & Chocolate Mouse) prepared by Susan Morgan was the dessert hit of the night. Over 70 people attended the celebrations where Michael Duffy and his crew on Hera were crowned the Howth 17 Champions of 2011.

The Howth 17 Class would like to thank the staff of the Howth Yacht Club for their support in the successful running of the two day event. We would like to offer our thanks to John Bennett and his team for supplying all the wine, water and glasses, to David & Philip from HYC Catering for supplying all the crockery and to all the friends of the class who made the event a massive success.

Next weekend on August 13th the Howth 17 Class are taking their summer holidays and are planning a cruise to Skerries. If anybody would like to join the class please email: [email protected]
