Volvo 420 National Championships 9th-11th August 2013

Colin O'Sullivan & David Whitaker

Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove of Howth Yacht Club put up the main challenge to brothers David and Harry Whitaker (RCYC) who won the overall event. Despite having had more first places than the Whitakers the HYC duo had to settle for second overall. Third boat was Ewan McMahon and Colin O'Sullivan, also of Howth, who put in some excellent performances particularly in the earlier races. Well done lads.

Race officer Richard Leonard completed a full series of nine races between Friday and Sunday with some great sailing to be seen just south east of Roche's Point off the entrance to Cork Harbour. The conditions were very variable with extremes of fast upwinds and light finishes.

For many of the leading sailors including Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove and Ewan McMahon and Colin O'Sullivan this event sets them up nicely for their next event.

Once the boats were back in the dinghy park on Sunday they were loaded onto a big trailer and off to Pwllheli in North Wales for the 420 Junior Europeans which started yesterday. The Howth boys had an eight hour turn around in Dublin before they crossed the Irish Sea to reach Pwellheli and prepare for the event.

Best of luck.
