Howth 17s Garryowen Cup
Author: John Deane Posted on: 24/7/13 Print Version

Tuesday night's one-design racing had an extra dimension this week with the running of the Garryowen Cup (Howth 17s Junior Race), a race normally scheduled to run during a quiet windless Sunday morning - a somewhat different affair this year.

Ten under-18's took the helms of Howth's finest racing treasures in a gusty and fresh southerly wind under the watchful guidance of their regular crews and owners.

An excellent start allowed Nadia Beshoff in 'Oona' take a substantial lead for most of the race, only to be snatched from her when (420-sailor) Fergus Flood avoided a windless area under the 'Stack' at Ireland's Eye on the penultimate leg and taking line-honours on 'Isobel'. Sam Markey finished second on 'Zaida' and Daniel Hopkins was 3rd on 'Echo'.
