We regret to announce the sad passing of Brian Dowling, known to his sailing friends as 'Dowser', on Saturday 9th June.

Brian made a significant contribution to the development of sailing in the post war years, mainly in his Mermaid, Ferdia.

He won many events throughout his career and was Mermaid Champion of Ireland at a time when the Mermaids were the largest sailing class in the country.

He was a prominent member of Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club, where he served as Commodore and President.

Following his marriage to Barbara he moved to Sutton and he added activities in HYC to his interests.

Brian became the HYC Race Officer in 1991 and did the job with professionalism and panache for many years. After racing he always socialised with the competitors and thereby maintained good relationships with those afloat.

We will miss him.
