J80s in Action

The ISA J80s have arrived in HYC and are here until the end of May. This is a great opportunity to go sailing in a one design fleet and we are keen to ensure that all club members who are keen to sail in the J80s get a chance to do so. There are 8 J80s available for sailing - they are moored on the marina and will be in HYC for the next 5 weeks (until the end of May when they will move to Dun Laoghaire for the summer).

A few keen sailors have organized a practice session on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9pm and would like to welcome all club members to join them and give everyone a chance to sail in the J80s. This week Mary O'Loughlin, Dylan Gannon, Ben Duncan, Ronan Cull, Garrett May, Laura Dillon and their respective crews took out 6 of the J80s and had a fantastic sail on Thursday evening from 6 to 9pm.

Thanks very much to Brian Turvey for overseeing all the J80 sailing in HYC and to Charles Blandford and Luke Malcolm for taking out a rib out and setting a windward-leeward course on Thursday evening.

We plan to make this a weekly Thursday evening sailing session in the J80s from 6-9pm for the next 5 weeks (until the end of May when the J80s move to Dun Laoghaire for the summer). Dependent on demand and the numbers of people interested in sailing the J80s, we could also arrange another evening - maybe Mondays or Fridays.

If you are keen to skipper a boat and get a crew together to go sailing in the J80s, please email Laura Dillon at [email protected] and Laura will do her best to ensure everyone gets to go sailing in the J80s on Thursday evenings (or another evening depending on demand). Laura will let you know the procedure for going sailing in the J80s. Also, if you are keen to crew on a J80 some evening, please also email Laura and she will do her best to match crews and skippers together, so that as many members as possible can get a chance to sail in the J80s.

Key Dates: Thursdays 29th April, 6th May, 13th May, 20th May, 27th May from 6-9pm (possibly other evenings too dependent on demand)

Please email [email protected] if interested.

J80s can be sailed with 4 or 5 crew on board (skipper, mainsheet, jib/spinnaker trimmer and bow).

The ISA Sailfleet J80s are available to be used most weekdays, many evenings and also on the following weekends: 1st & 2nd May, 22nd & 23rd May, 29th & 30th May.

If you want to book a boat(s) for a sail, please contact the Hon. Sailing Secretary, Brian Turvey (086 832 7425).

Before crews can take out a boat - each skipper is required to give a cheque or credit card imprint for Euro Symbol1,000 as a damage deposit.

Boats need to be de-rigged to their original state and tied up correctly, no litter should be left behind and any damage must be reported to the Marina Office at check-out.
