Royal Cork Yacht Club helms won both the senior and junior divisions of the Joe Duffy BMW Optimist Connacht Championships hosted by Malahide Yacht Club, with the honours going to Douglas Elmes and James McCann respectively.

The Joe Duffy BMW sponsored Optimist Connacht Championships were hosted by Malahide Yacht Club on the weekend of 8th & 9th September. Sailed on the Broadmeadows estuary, the event attracted an entry of 130 boats which included 23 HYC representatives (5 senior, 9 junior & 9 regatta fleet). In light to moderate, shifting southerlies, Race Officer Neil Murphy and his team successfully completed the full schedule of six races.

In the Senior Division, Douglas Elmes from WHSC & RCYC counted two wins, two seconds and a third to take the Connacht title by five points from clubmate Ronan Cournane while two other RCYC helms, Harry Durcan and his brother Johnny, filled the next two places.

Richard Hogan was the best of the HYC senior fleet finishing 10th overall while Alex Kavanagh finished second in the silver fleet.

The Junior Division had a large 75-boat turn-out and the eventual (Gold Fleet) winner James McCann (RCYC) only had two points to spare over runner-up Peter Fagan of the National YC. Best of the HYC sailors was Daniel Hopkins in 5th, while Alex O'Grady had to be content with 7th despite two race wins in races 1 & 3.

Eve McMahon continued her winning ways in the regatta fleet, with William Lacy the next best HYC boat in 5th place.
