The Royal Alfred Yacht Club Superleague series for keelboats has proved to be a successful and engaging addition to the Dublin Bay Sailing Club's programme of summer racing. It provided an extra frisson of interest in many classes but without the stress of having to compete in even more events in an already crowded calendar.
The spread of ten races with a generous four discards meant that some winners were decided on the last or second last race of the series. Others, and "Supernova" comes to mind, were the clear leaders from early on and never looked likely to give up their pole position.
With almost 60 boats taking part, it meant that a good percentage of the yachts that race on a regular basis took part in the Superleague. However it was a pity that some of the smaller craft such as the Glens and flying fifteens did not have enough entries to allow for the awarding of a prize. Hopefully this will be rectified in 2013.
It is intended to run the Superleague again next year and we look forward to an increase in this numbers for this enjoyable extension to the racing programme.
An innovation of the Superleague is the awarding of prizes to not only the Skipper but also to the crew of winning yachts. These small mementoes are a reminder to us all that without the efforts of the crew there would be very little activity in the Bay !
The prizes will be presented at the RAYC Annual Dinner (Black Tie) being held in the National Yacht Club on Friday 30th November. All members and friends of the RAYC are welcome and booking can be made directly with Mr Tim O'Brien the club Manager at 2805725.
