Following the EGM last November when approval was given to proceed with the forecourt extension (which is currently underway), it was agreed that the Club should investigate further the feasibility of extending the marina to meet increasing demand for berths.
The first stage in this process is to seek planning permission for such a development and this has recently been activated by the General Committee. Only after planning permission is granted can the Club proceed to the next stage of costing the project.
Such is demand for space in the marina that the waiting list stretches back many years as the growth of sailing continues in Howth, despite the recessionary times in which we now live. Demand for marina berths is not restricted to larger yachts but extends to smaller keelboats such as Squibs and Puppeteers. The existing marina is full to its capacity of 300 boats, the vast majority of which are sailing craft rather than power boats.
"A lot of factors have to be taken into consideration before we can start such an extension", said Commodore Peter McKenna, "but this is the first step in the procedure. There is a demand for additional berths and we are looking at this extension to facilitate our members' needs and those of potential new members."
