Laser Munster Championship

The Laser Munster championship was held over the Easter weekend in Baltimore Co. Cork. The forecast for high winds indicated that it would be a challenging event. Three races were completed in 25 knots on Saturday and sailing was cancelled on Sunday.

Howth had competitors in all fleets in the Standard rig Paul Mc Mahon finished top of the HYC sailors finishing 6th overall. Mark Kennedy and Troy Hopkins also competed finishing a little further back in the fleet.

The highly competitive Radial fleet was won by Analise Murphy. Howth has one competitor. Aoife Hopkins. It was Aoife's first Radial event but unfortunately Aoife suffered equipment failure and was unable to complete the races.

In the 4.7 fleet Richard Hogan in his first outing as a 4.7 sailor posted 3 top 10 results to finish 9th overall.

ISA Youth Nationals

The ISA Youth Nationals were held in Lough Derg from the 4th-7th April. Seasoned sailors equate Lough Derg with light shifty conditions or high winds. During the Youth Nationals both were experienced.

Once again Howth's junior laser sailors competed well.

The radial fleet competed 4 days of racing over a 16 race series with one discard. The cream of the Isa Academy recently returned form International acclaim in Lake Garda dominated the top of the fleet.

Howth had two competitors Aoife Hopkins and Alex Delamer. Aoife (having had her sail repaired by Philip Watson) was at 14 years of age was the youngest competitor but held her own in the 44 boat fleet to finish a credible 31st achieving a number of top 20 results. Alex Delamer having recently won the Winter frostbite series in Howth finished in 35th place overall.

The radial fleet was won by Robbie Gilmore form Strangford Lough and we wish him every success in the ISAF Youth World championships this summer. The coveted girls place went to Sarah Eames of Ballyholme Yacht Club.

Howth's best result came from Richard Hogan in the laser 4.7 fleet. Richard recovering well from a bad first race posted mainly top 10 results to finish in an excellent 5th position after 3 days of sailing.
