The first leg of the 2010 Optimist Trials to choose sailors for the European, French Nationals and U-12 teams were held in Lough Derg on 9th to 11th April. 66 invited sailors travelled from all corners of the country.
Race Officer Phillip Cowman took charge of the fleet and the 8 race schedule. He was able to secure 3 races on the Friday and 4 races on the Saturday ahead of a very light forecast for the Sunday. Indeed there was next to no wind on the Sunday and racing was abandoned in the early afternoon.

Over the two days of racing the breeze ranged from 2-12 knots with plenty of shifts on the beats to test the sailors. Starting was also hazardous with some of our sailors picking up the dreaded black flag.
HYC have 6 sailors representing the club namely Craig Campbell, Robert Dickson, Richard Hogan, Aoife Hopkins, Fergus Flood and Erica Ruigrok. Consistency was difficult to achieve though some of our sailors achieved some excellent individual results - Robert 14th, 13th ; Erica 8th & 6th; Fergus 16th & 5th; Richard 11th, 9th & 6th.
With a potential 9 races to be sailed at the 2nd leg of the trials in Dun Laoghaire over the May bank holiday weekend there is still a long way to go. Our HYC sailors still have a great opportunity to regain some consistency to meet their own expectations and compete for team places

Best of luck to you all.
