The Irish Laser National championships were held in the National Yacht club Dun Laoighaire from Thursday the 23rd to Sunday the 25th of August.
There was a fantastic turn out of approx 140 boats spread across the three fleets 4.7, radial & full rig.
Howth had one representative in each fleet. Aoife Hopkins (4.7), Robert Ferris (Radial) and Troy Hopkins (Standard rig). 11 races were completed in mainly medium conditions and the highlight of the event was the Tall Ships Parade on the Sunday. The Tall ships moored close to race course and watched curiously as the racing progressed although it was debatable as to who was watching whom!
The highly competitive Full rig fleet boasted no less than five Olympians as Annalise Murphy made a return to home waters. She made the brave decision to race in a full rig rather than her normal radial and was narrowly beaten by fellow Olympian James Espey.
The best of the Howth sailors was Aoife who was 7th overall in the 4.7 fleet and received a prize for 3rd girl. It was Aoife’s second time in a laser as she has sailed a Topper for the last two seasons but will now progress to the laser.
he National Yacht club ran a great event and PRO Con Murphy set courses quickly and operated with his usual efficiency. While no doubt keeping a weather eye on his daughters sailing!
