Chris Howard
Chris Howard for his magnificent organisation of the ICRA Nationals in HYC earlier this year. Chris as chairperson of the event, developed a team around him and steered the event to the success that it was. Record entry to the Championships of almost 130 yachts. 80% were visitors to Howth. Prominently featured in the following Monday's Irish Times not only charming the competitors but also the sponsors who were thrilled with the event. This was the 3rd time that HYC had been asked to run the event, and it's clear that the next ICRA in Howth won't be far away.

Neil Murphy
Neil Murphy does a lot of work for HYC, as race officer and particularly for Junior events. He volunteers in a quiet way and is always utterly professional. Neil has a wonderful attitude to Howth Yacht Club and to his fellow competitors particularly in the Puppeteer fleet. He maintains an exceptionally high standard of integrity during his racing and has the correct sailing "Ethos" which many racers look up to. We would like the work that he does, and the advice that he gives and his wonderful attitude throughout the year (winter & summer) both on and off the water, be recognised in this nomination.

Dermot Skehan
Dermot Skehan is nominated for this award due to all the hard work and effort he put in for the Saturday series of white sail racing. Not only did he subsidize the BarBQ from his own pocket but he donated all the takings to the lifeboat. He supplied all his own cooking facilities including the BarBQ, gas, napkins, tables, plates etc. It proved to be a huge hit with the sailors and it offered more than the usual burger during various Open events that took place during the summer.

Seaward Bell Trophy

Caroline Burke, Dinghy & Junior Affairs Officer, explained why the Seaward Bell will not be awarded for this year. She commented ...

This year for the first time since its inception in 2005 the Sailing committee received no nominations for the Seaward Bell. The Seaward Bell is this beautiful trophy presented to the club by Kevin Darmody to be awarded annually to a junior sailor who in the opinion of the sailing committee has excelled in open events at home and or abroad.

The first recipient was Diana Kissane, in 2005 Diana achieved 16th place at the European Optimist Championships in Poland, she also achieved 1st place at the Irish Optimist Nationals and was also 1st girl in the Junior Helmsman championship.

We have absolutely no doubt that following on the success of our Junior Sailors for 2013 we will have many nominations.

The G M Trophy

Medb Glacken receives The G M Trophy from Commodore Breda Dillon

We are very fortunate that this year Nic and Marie Parton made a presentation of this lovely trophy 'The G M Trophy' (General Manager) to be presented annually at Achievers Night in recognition of a junior who is putting in the time and effort and using their best endeavor to improve their sailing skills.
Need I say it was a most difficult task to try and complete a shortlist, however it had to be done, and the Junior Committee together with Graeme and myself came up with the nominations below:

Start Sailing Level: James Vyse
James comes from a non sailing family and is new to the sport, he was deemed by Caroline, Graeme and the coaching staff as very enthuastic and keen, there is no doubt he will become an excellent sailor.

Basic Skills Level: Oliver Juchnevicius
Oliver is another very keen sailor, and new to the club this year, he has taken every opportunity since his course to go out on the water, signed up for autumn training and competed at some club races.

Improver Skills Level: Matthew Knowles & Gavin Brazel
Matthew and Gavin have shown tremendous improvement over the past year in their sailing ability, Gavin went as far as to take extra training to improve, and Matthew was so keen he achieved what many would like to do, he managed to get off school early on Fridays to attend the after school training such was his interest; and we have no doubt this is due to their commitment to the sport.

Advanced Boat Handling: William Quinn
William has shown commitment to sailing, he has been a very willing student both on and off the water; he frequently competed at club racing in his topper often the only topper out there, and was also a ready and willing crew in the Feva class.

Kites & Wires Level 1: Jamie & Alex O'Grady
The twins are very active Optimist sailors competing at National and Regional level, they have in the coaching staff's opinion also shown a keenness to learn at Kites & Wires level.

Adventure level: Medb Glacken
Medb is in her second year as a club member, she came to the club as a Mirror sailor, frequently availed of the club rental system to try out the 420 boat, availed of all training possibilities, raced the boat frequently at club level and went on to buy her own 420 boat. Maeve was also one of our Assistants during the ISA Summer Courses, and will go on to hopefully achieve her Dinghy Instructor Certificate next year.

Isabelle Delamer
Isabelle has been a very active sailor both at club, regional and national level, far too many to mention, her commitment to sailing even includes getting up on dark wintry weekends to attend Regional squad training.

Aoife Hopkins
Like Isabelle, Aoife has been a very active sailor both at club, regional and national level and also has shown her commitment to sailing attending regional squad training. Her personality shines through while she often helps younger sailors in the dinghy park in their rigging for races etc.

Eve McMahon
Eve has been nominated for her commitment to Optimist sailing, while only in her eighth year, she clearly follows in her talented brothers steps, she has achieved remarkable results in the Regatta Fleet at regional events for such a young age. Her brothers better watch out!
