During the Easter break, three of our dinghy classes travelled to Scull & Baltimore to compete in the ISA Youth Nationals and Munster Championships and did the Club proud with record results in heavy weather racing.

HYC Commodore, Gerry O'Neill ( photos below )
congratulated the sailors on their return to Howth.

Laser 4.7

Andrew Tyrrell
1st - Laser 4.7 - Youth National Champion
1st - Laser 4.7 - Munster Champion

Katie Malcolm
3rd - Laser 4.7 Youth Nationals (1st Girl)

Andrew Tyrrell won the Munster championships in Baltimore held over Easter Saturday & Sunday having 3 firsts and 1 second in a 31 boat fleet.

This very talented 14 year old then travelled to scull and once again got the results and finished first in the ISA Youth Nationals in an 18 boat fleet. Andrew started sailing lasers last year after being sized out of the opi class where he achieved some excellent results in previous years and from these results the transfer to this very competitive class has proven successful despite such a young age.

Other HYC sailors who travelled were Katie Malcolm who finished 3rd and was first girl while her brother Luke finished 4th in both events.

The Radial fleet also had the following creditable results with Alan Ruigrok who only recently made the transfer from 4.7 finishing 12th, Gillian Condy 16th, and Ross Darmody 22nd.

At the Youth Nationals, Alan, Ross and Gillian improved their respective positions to 5th, 9th and 10th.

This Class now numbers 27 in Howth. The success of this class has now been recognised by the ISA as the junior pathway 2 handed dinghy. Lewis Eickholt and Billy Griffin finished first with 6 wins out of a possible 9 races.

Chris Malcolm and Simon Lawlor finished in 3rd and it is reassuring to note that the Coaching efforts of Gillian Guinness throughout the autumn and winter have paid off resulting in such credible results.

420 Class

3 boats travelled to the Munster's & the ISA Youth Nationals with Tim O'Laoire and his crew Ben Kelleher RStGYC Finishing 1st Youth at the Munster's and 2nd at the Nationals in a 15 boat fleet.
