With all the boats rigged and ready to launch in time for the planned first gun at 1100, launching was delayed for an hour as we basked in glorious sunshine but not a puff of wind. However, Peter McKenna, the PRO, remained totally calm as he placed his faith in the sea breeze which duly obliged.
Two races were scheduled and the first started at 1300 with a steady easterly 8 knots. The wind direction gradually changed to the south east for the second race and increased to between 10 and 12 knots, providing perfect sailing conditions.
Five classes competed with five starts in the sequence - Lasers, Fevas, Topaz, Pico's and Oppy's. Although there were just two Pico's, they were separated by less than half a boat length in the closest finish of the day.
The new Fevas from HYC were joined by boats from the National, Royal St. George and Royal Irish. This fleet is growing at a steady pace around Dublin and enjoyed close racing during the day. Most of the Fevas were in HYC on Saturday for a coaching session with Gillian Guinness prior to the event.
The Topaz fleet travelled from Malahide and it was good to see a mixture of adults and children racing together.
